RLS Logistics Completes First Phase of Solar Retrofit Plan
RLS Logistics and HelioSage, a Mid-Atlantic solar project developer, have completed the first phase of a plan to retrofit the RLS headquarters with solar electricity. The new roof-mounted solar array consists of 935 panels. When all phases of the project are complete, RLS hopes to produce up to 50% of its power via solar electricity, generating a significant energy cost savings for the company over the life of the system.
Under a contract known as a Power Purchase Agreement, or PPA, RLS hosts the solar array and pays a monthly solar power bill, allowing the company to go solar without any capital outlay. "The solar array is essentially a mini-power plant on the facility's roof," explained HelioSage's Chief Operating Officer, Matt Hantzmon. "When all the phases of the retrofit are complete, we anticipate annual electricity production sufficient to power 160 average U.S. homes."
"While this is just the first phase of the project," said RLS CEO Anthony M. Leo, "we are already generating a significant proportion of our facility's power needs from a clean source and at a better price. RLS has a reputation for delivering innovative supply chain solutions that benefit our customers, our partners, and our community. This is a great example."
In addition to installing the new solar panel array, RLS has taken a number of other sustainability initiatives said Mr. Leo. These include the installation of LED lighting with occupancy sensors, which can save approximately 80% to 92% in lighting costs.
